Theater's Best Go Head-To-Head!

What's the Scoop?

By night's end, Schmigadoon! was dancing away with the evening's top prize, Best Musical, while also collecting awards for its score, book, and orchestrations.

Liberation continued its remarkable awards-season run by claiming Best Play, and the sweeping revival of Ragtime reminded audiences why it remains one of Broadway's most beloved shows, picking up a quartet of Tony Awards.

The ceremony also delivered a slice of Tony history. At 80 years old, John Lithgow became the oldest male performer ever to win a competitive acting Tony for his portrayal of Roald Dahl in Giant. Laurie Metcalf was another big winner, earning recognition for her work in Death of a Salesman and helping power the acclaimed revival to a night-leading six awards.
